REFLECTION | To play music skillfully it requires discipline. When I was a teenager in the 90's, I played basketball, bowled in leagues, played video games, listen to a lot of Jazz records, and practiced! There was no Social Media to keep up with, or Google to search everything, or Youtube to watch any video imaginable. I used to transcribe with my tape player rewinding playing, and pausing, singing and then finding the notes on my horn. The generations born in the 90's onward have fast access to so much info. but at the same time overwhelmed by distractions! So not only do they have to discipline themselves to practice but also have to learn how to stay focused on the right things. We're more connected with everybody on here but I've seen so many narcissistic & insecure musicians just because they're so caught up in everybody else's opinion of them. I can definitely see the social engineering/programming's effect at work. I just thank God for the Holy Spirit that continues to guide my steps! I gotta get back to transcribing and and transposing in all keys. Young musicians, you want to have "it", this is what you have to do. It takes focus, discipline, and undistracted practice time. This means SACRIFICING time spent on something else. Just saying!
