MUSICIAN INSIGHT | You know, at the core you have to have a heart of worship! Kats get caught up in the intellectual, technical, and other superficial aspects of music and never are able to really play stuff that MEANS something. The roots of the music developed out of the church and worship services. Being "soulful" is being honest and connecting with something deep within your heart. You can always hear it in a kat's playing who understands this. Now, just to clarify, you CAN open up a channel for the wrong spirits to flow through you, especially for those that don't have Jesus or the Holy Spirit in their heart! My goal from a kid was always to give God glory through the music that I played. Playing well does require good technique and use of your intellect but you can't get stuck in those aspects alone. You have to ALWAYS remained focused on the END Game, which is to give God His do praise through the music that you produce. Instrumentalists have to understand that when we express ourselves on our instrument, we allow certain things to pass through our spirit that are released into the atmosphere and the climate is affected by it. Most musicians are totally ignorant of this, or they just don't pay attention to this type of thing. You can't just do stuff just because you see or hear people do it, you have to study and get educated to what's going on. Then you can put yourself in a better position to aim at the right target when you play. I hear kats say all the time, "I'm searching" or they say "I'm on a spiritual journey" I'm like... WHAT??? It ain't that deep, you just confused because you been serving the wrong god. God is NOT the author of confusion! (1 Cor 14:33) Ultimately, you want to get your life in line with the Word of God and let your music reflect and/or celebrate the joy of that journey! Many musicians are on a never ending journey of confusion because they simply haven't came clean with who they're gonna serve and it's clearly evident in their playing. This has nothing to do with style, genre, or even technique but rather about the MOTIVE BEHIND WHY YOU PLAY! Examine your motive, pray and seek the Lord and He'll get you on the right track! Oh, and students, don't allow controlling music teachers to put you in bondage because they're trying to live vicariously through you! Be practical and realistic for the goals you set for yourself, you are free to choose the course you'd like to take! May the Lord be with you, Quamon Fowler
